Excess foot pronation
Excess foot pronation can lead to poor foot function and poor lower leg biomechanics.
What is excess foot pronation?
Pronation is a term used to describe the inward rotation of a body part and is often seen within the foot. Excess pronation occurs in the foot when the arch flattens out and the ankle joint rolls inward too much during walking or running . It is one of the most common biomechanical faults that podiatrists observe.
Why is it important?
In order for our feet to function smoothly and efficiently we need some degree of pronation. However, excess pronation may lead to problems such as: shin pain, tired and aching feet, ankle, knee, hip and back pain.
Excess pronation and computer gait analysis
Computer gait analysis allows us to slow down and analyse your walking or running technique frame by frame. This helps us to identify excess foot pronation or other subtle biomechanical faults, even when they occur rapidly and are not obvious to the naked eye.
Treatment of excess foot pronation
Excess pronation is a problem which is encountered daily in practice and treatment is based upon restoring and supporting the foot's normal arch and alignment, usually with custom-made orthotics.
