Heel pain

Plantar fasciitis

There are many causes of heel pain but plantar fasciitis is the most common cause in adults.

Plantar fasciitis is a debilitating condition causing pain under the heel on weight-bearing. Pain can also sometimes be felt under the arch or around the edges of the heel. It is often most painful after getting up in the morning, with pain usually subsiding after walking around for a while.

For more information on this condition please see our main page on Plantar Fasciitis.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome results from entrapment of the posterior tibial nerve in the tarsal tunnel (on the inside of your ankle) leading to pain in the medial heel and arch. The presentation is often similar to plantar fasciitis and often misdiagnosed.

Pain can be either a diffuse, burning, numbness or tingling sensation radiating into the foot. A small percentage may also experience pain at night. Pain is often worse with activity and better at rest.

Bruised heel

A bruised heel is a very disabling condition caused by either an acute incident or repetitive pounding on the heel. The patient complains of severe heel pain and is unable to bear weight on the affected heel.

Haglunds deformity (heel bump)

Haglunds deformity (also referred to as heel bump or pump bump) is a bony enlargement on the back of the heel close to the achilles tendon insertion. Pain is felt when the overlying soft tissue area becomes inflammed as the bony bump rubs against the back of shoes.
