Bunions
Bunions are a disfiguring structural deformity affecting the big toe. It causes the big toe joint to open up on one side and in some instances to dislocate, angling the toe towards the second toe.
Symptoms of bunions may include pain, swelling and inflammation within the joint or the skin around the bunion. Often arthritis is associated within the later stages of the deformity. Bunions often make walking difficult, and simple tasks such as purchasing shoes can be a real problem.
Factors which may cause bunions include genetics, poor fitting footwear , poor foot mechanics or excess pronation.
Our podiatrists can help relieve symptoms by improving foot mechanics with custom-made orthotics. If the bunion is treated early then it is often possible to slow down, or even stop further progression of the problem.
Neuroma
A neuroma is a painful condition whereby the nerve passing through the foot to the toes becomes entrapped, thickened and irritated. It usually occurs in the space between the third or fourth toes; however neuromas may also occur between other toes.
Symptoms vary from a mild burning or tingling pain to a sharp shooting pain into the toes. Symptoms are usually exacerbated by walking or wearing shoes that are too tight. Abnormal foot shape, poor foot mechanics and excess pronation can also be attributing factors.
Treatment outcomes are best if treated early by one of our podiatrists and custom made orthotics can be of great benefit. In chronic cases surgery may be the only effective solution.

Back pain
There are many causes of back pain and often the problem is quite complex but one factor that often goes unnoticed is the feet. Poor foot mechanics and excess pronation can cause incorrect positioning of the pelvis during walking. Therefore flat feet or feet that don’t function well may be a factor in your back pain. Other lower leg factors that can cause back pain include a limb length discrepancy or tight muscles.
Our podiatrists can accurately assess your feet, legs and gait using computer gait analysis to see if your feet may be affecting your back.
Treatment may involve custom made orthotics which helps realign the feet, improving lower leg function and posture. This will assist in stabilising the pelvis and enhancing the normal function of the spine.
