Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a debilitating condition causing pain under the heel on weight-bearing. Pain can also sometimes be felt under the arch or around the edges of the heel. It is often most painful after getting up in the morning, with pain usually subsiding after walking around for a while.
People often refer to this condition as heel spur syndrome but literature is currently divided on the origin of the spur, so plantar fasciitis is a more correct diagnosis.
Causes
Plantar fasciitis is caused by excessive strain on the plantar fascia (thick band of tissue that runs under the arch of the foot). Strain mostly occurs around its attachment site in the heel. Some common causes can be:
- Acute injury
- Excessive weight
- Poor foot function or excess foot pronation
- Poor footwear
Treatment
It is essential that treatment is commenced as early as possible to gain the best outcomes. Plantar fasciitis can be hard to treat if chronic, so don’t delay in making an appointment with one of our podiatrists.
Treatment may consist of the following:
- Strapping
- Ultrasound and Laser therapy
- Orthotics, either soft or custom-made.
